Spank’s successful Spike Flat Pedal is about to get lighter. Having already proven itself in long-term real world tests by both racers and everyday riders, the brand is in the process of developing a retrofit race upgrade kit that includes a lightweight titanium axle and 7-series alloy pin set.
The Spike pedal race upgrade kit has undergone months of testing by Logan Binggeli and with no significant issues so far, Brand Manager Mike Dutton decided to put me on the test program. I have been testing the race upgrade kit with titanium axle and “bling” 7-series alloy pin kit. This kit was designed to drop 65gr from the already lightweight 400gr standard pedal.
After using the race upgrade kit on my Spike pedals up here in the Whistler Bike Park, Spank and I have worked together to make some changes to the production run. While the titanium axle has been flawless and will likely remain unchanged for the production run, the final pin set will thread further into the pedal body, making them much harder to lose on the trail. At this stage the pins will extend a further 0.5mm on the “shoe side” than the prototype version – some 1.5mm longer than the standard steel pin version. The finish on those nice lightweight 7-series alloy pins will be much more durable than the current gold anodizing too, which stood no match to the abrasive mud of the bike park.
Spank have always strived to produce “set and forget” MTB components, something I discovered in great detail when I was given the opportunity to test a pre-production Oozy 26AL Evo wheelset. The pins in the Spike pedal race upgrade kit are no exception – even something as simple as the longevity of the pedal pin finish is of huge importance to the Spank Industries team.
Final pricing and release date are not yet set, however it is estimated that the upgrade kit will be available either late Summer or Fall 2013. Race upgrade kits for the Spank Spike Flat Pedals will only be available from Spank HQ (at least for the first season they are available) in order to keep pricing affordable.
